unbelievable some of these comments posted here, its like SAns are not in touch with real issues affecting grassroots, what's the diffs with this man sleeping under the bridge or at the grave site, homeless ppl use anything which can provide some shelter (against bad weather) come on ppl think pliz and stop dazzling us with ignorant and insensitivity to the real issues facing those of us not so lucky, cause when you do that, you will start realising that it is morally wrong for those of who continue to support the gov's failure to deliver, this man was an informal business owner, and his business went under due to lack of support for these entrepreneurs by this gov of uselessness, now he ends up as a homeless person, please have a heart afterall our culture as abantu dictates that we don't laugh at other's misfortunes, in isiXho.sa we say inxeba lendoda alihlekwa.

this gov is able to do this to our ppl cause there is a lot of ignorance amongst us, it is this ignorance which cause us to fail to ask how ppl like this men end up where they are when we were promised a better life, I am not saying the gov shld dole out handouts but they must prop up those who are vulnerable, cause it is clear to me that before this man's circumstances caused him to be homeless, he had an ambition, hence he was a street vendor not a criminal, come on ppl let us not be selfish and just be content that a few of us have roofs and a living reasonably luxurious lives, we must fight for social justice for those who are still out in the cold,

This man needs to be delivered from the legion of demons, this can't be normal. I need to go to that cemetry to help him get his mind back.

They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.
Mar 5:2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.
Mar 5:3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain,
Mar 5:4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.
Mar 5:5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and bruising himself with stones.
Mar 5:6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.
Mar 5:7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me."
Mar 5:8 For he was saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"
Mar 5:9 And Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" He replied, "My name is Legion, for we are many."
Mar 5:10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.

We are talking about a drug addict here. Where have you ever seen a drug addict suddenly become a model citizen because they had a house? This guy's family has given up on him because he won't stop. Giving him a house won't stop him. He needs to WANT to stop and then he needs to be given access to assistance to allow HIM to stop. A house isn't a one stop instant rehab which will ensure he doesn't steam himself every day.

I know that MC but the gov (social services) have a duty to provide support and in fact addiction is treated as a mental illness and ppl with this problem shld be provided with necessary care not be left in their own devices, it cld not have been an easy decision for the family to give up on one of their own, you know? the families should be supported cause this must be traumatic for them too, cause this guy could be a father to which due to his mental illness he is not able to be proper dad.

Social & Statistical Studie/research have proven beyond doubt that there is more women than men but I find it strange that number of men suffering from mental illnesses out number women suffering the same.

Men are 65% more likely to put women lives in physical/emotional agony when compared to their counter parts but it is the former that quickly shows signs of distress.

You know MC what really really gets me mad is that I suggested these things at one stage cause in my area (kasi) we have a lot of addicted persons, generally I believe that everyone should be afforded the basis, cause then ppl will have dignity and self respect and will know to let themselves and their families down, we have already paid through tax for this service now what's stopping the ball from rolling?

@BrothaX its cause society has put pressure on boy child to now show emotions, as such men tend to bottle up their issues rather than talking about them, hence you find this violence (domestic/femicide) its the symptoms of mental stress,

had we as a nation been given proper leaders, these are the issues we should be talking about, not the all the other BS we've been busy with post plkn.

Our social services department is a train smash. Some of the social workers have case loads which 100 people couldn't get through. There is also a sad lack of understanding when it comes to mental illness. It is either a baloyi or an evil spirit or the devil - never just a brain chemical imbalance. That stigmatises it and makes the jobs of the (too few + poorly equipped) social workers very difficult indeed.

As I say though, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. If he doesn't want to stop then a whole barn full of social workers aren't going to make a damn worth of difference

Its true that MC but how does this gov managed to lose our resources to other countries? cause this understaffed is direct result of brain drain.

I am saying MC before we condemn him and write him off, we should have at least have ensured him that he has basic support necessary for every addict not only in SA but the world to go back to his feet, its not an easy job, and as you know its an ongoing process, hence we should have a gov with process that ongoing and well funded, but the gov's of Africa are known not to value human resources hence refugees/brain drain whilst they are focusing on embezzlement projects.

Would you work here for a salary that doesn't cover your student loan whilst being expected to go into dangerous areas all alone and having a case load of over a thousand - or would you work overseas?

One social worker that used to study with my daughter has a BA and is expected to handle 380 odd 'at risk' child cases in Little Zambia. The bloody cops won't go into Little Zambia without an army escort but she is expected to take her rusty old Golf through there on her own to check on children of ex convicts.

@MC I agree hence I said the gov is causing this problem by allowing brain-drain, their failure to compensate professionals accordingly has this bad effect on service delivery. I blame them not the ones who seek greener pastures hell I also work abroad (as you know) often cause this gov has frustrated every entrepreneurial fibre in my body,

I am also amazed that badly managed human resource affairs have been proven to be teh major barrier in the continent for deliverance of services,

Africans must understand that we need professionals more than we need politicians and when they come to this realisation they must vote the chaff masquerading as gov out and do the right thing in order for us to be able to leave a respectable legacy behind for our kids. what kind of Africa/country we will leave behind for our children? a country that is in debt, cause we allowed politicians to get away with looting us? a debt that can not be serviced cause majority of children will be unemployable cause the gov failed to grow the economic pie? SAns who vote in SA please think about these things and take necessary actions, cause really this is not scientific knowledge.

Can you just imagine going to visit Auntiie Sophiie's gr@ve and there he is taking a p on it (not exactly a glutt of pub1ic 1oos around graveyards)?
