George Mthimunye has been appointed municipal manager of eMalahleni municipality, in Mpumalanga, effective from April 1.

eMalahleni municipal spokesman Lebohang Mofokeng said: "I can confirm that Mr Mthimunye is our new municipal manager following a resolution by a council meeting."

Mthimunye made headlines when the Dr JS Moroka municipality in Siyabuswa had its assets attached after the non-payment of legal fees and damages in a sexual harassment case against him and the municipality.

In January this year, the municipality had to make a payment of R549,000 for the legal costs after 11 of its vehicles were attached by the sheriff of the court to recoup the legal costs.

In 2010, the court ordered the municipality to pay a former clerk R1.3-million after she had sued for sexual harassment.

Mthimunye, who resigned before being charged, was reappointed at the Naledi municipality in Vryburg, North West, where he was subsequently suspended for allegedly inflating and awarding a traffic department tender without following proper procedure.
