A KwaZulu-Natal man who lost control of his vehicle, killing his six passengers, will serve three years under house arrest
Mzuphilile Gadu, 24, was sentenced to three years imprisonment, suspended for five years, by the Durban High Court, provincial transport spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said.
The court ordered the three-year sentence be served under house arrest.
He would only be allowed to leave the house for going to church, school or seeing a doctor.
He also had to do 16 hours of community service a month.
Gadu was driving down Clark Road in Durban when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree in May last year. ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said at the time that paramedics found the seven occupants strewn across the road. Five women and a man died on the scene.
Gadu pleaded guilty to charges of culpable homicide.
Transport MEC Willies Mchunu said he was concerned the court did not suspend Gadu’s driver’s licence.
“Our view is that people who are responsible for killing others on the road must be given harsher sentences,” Mchunu said.
