Pedestrians blamed for road death toll

TRANSPORT Minister Sbu Ndebele says drunk pedestrians are the main contributor to road fatalities.

Ndebele said pedestrian deaths accounted for 40% of the 14,000 people killed on SA's roads a year .

He was speaking at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg yesterday, where he released preliminary statistics on road deaths for the Easter weekend.

He said 181 people had been killed on the country's roads between last Thursday and Monday.

He said the figure reflected a decline in fatalities compared with the same period last year when 296 people were killed.

"Major contributory factors are speeding, dangerous overtaking, fatigue, drinking and driving or walking, and tyre failure," Ndebele said.

He said Limpopo topped the list with 32 deaths, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 30 and Gauteng claiming 23 lives.

He said the Northern Cape had the lowest rate with four people killed. Second from the bottom was Western Cape with 13.

Ndebele, in partnership with Eqstra Fleet Management and Logistics, a vehicle leasing and trucking company, also launched the Think Pedestrian campaign that will focus on educational road programmes for both pedestrians and drivers.

Ndebele said the campaign, which forms part of Mandela Day initiatives, would first be rolled out in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape.

Ndebele said the road safety campaign would run until the beginning of May.
