ANC divisions 'like a virus'

The divisions in the North West ANC are becoming a virus threatening governance of the province, the party’s deputy secretary says

“The division that persists in the North West province’s African National Congress is becoming a virus that is plunging governance and the stability of politics into a crisis,” Thandi Modise said in Ikageng township, Potchefstroom, according to a copy of her speech.

She said factionalism undermined political stability and party growth, caused “government gridlock” and voters to lose confidence in the democratic system.

Modise reminded her audience that the ANC’s values included honesty, respect for leadership, and discipline.

She said the party would continue to promote transformation of the judiciary, and consolidate the legitimacy of this arm of the state in a constitutional democracy.

“Informed by the doctrine of separation of powers, the ANC will encourage mutual respect among the three arms of the state — the legislature, the executive and the judiciary — in dealing with matters of common interest.”
