Sibling dies in shooting

Cop allegedly shot and killed his sister and injured his brother during a family squabble

A LIMPOPO police officer allegedly shot and killed his sister and injured his brother during a family squabble at Mosesetjane village near Mokopane at the weekend.

The incident happened at about 8pm on Friday.

The 33-year-old constable, who was attached to the public order police in Polokwane, was allegedly involved in a heated argument with his two siblings before the shooting.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said they arrested the police officer and charged him with murder and attempted murder.

"It is alleged the suspect had an argument with his 39-year-old sister and 23-year-old brother at their home in Mosesetjane village," Ramatseba said.

"The injured brother was admitted to a local hospital, where he is receiving treatment," he said.

According to Ramatseba the motive for the attack has not yet been established.

He identified the deceased as Peggy Tema, 39.

"Preliminary investigations have revealed that the deceased was shot twice. One bullet hit her in the chest and another in the foot," he said.

He said the deceased's brother was shot five times.

"We are happy to say the injured victim is currently showing signs of recovery. We just hope he will reveal details after he is discharged from hospital," he said.

Ramatseba advised members of the police who were experiencing challenges in personal affairs to seek professional help instead of resorting to violence.

He said it was the first incident in their area in which a police officer had attacked his own siblings. The officer was expected to appear in the Mahwelereng Magistrate's Court today.

Ramatseba said the policeman's official firearm was used in the shootings and had been confiscated.
