Over 5,000 people from poor backgrounds, mostly orphans and the disabled, will receive food from the Limpopo food park, which was officially opened in Seshego, Polokwane on Monday.
“Over R20 million has been set aside to support food security in this province, and part of the money will be used to fence 600km, which will be divided into plots in the rural areas for agriculture,” Limpopo agriculture MEC Jacob Marule said at the event.
The park would operate in the current financial year through support from the Food Bank of South Africa, traditional leaders and local municipalities.
On Monday, it donated non-perishable food items such as dry beans and maize meal to some indigent families.
According to Marule, Sunbake Bakery would donate 600 loaves of bread to the park monthly. Pick n Pay in Johannesburg had also pledged to donate food.
“Already, 60 NGOs have been contracted to the food park to supply food which will take care of the unemployable people,” Marule said.
