Spokesman Albi Modise said the Kruger National Park (KNP) with 75 led in the number of rhinos poached followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 18, Limpopo with 17 and the North West province with 15.

In 2011 South Africa lost 448 rhinos to illegal hunting and the unlawful trade in rhino horn.

Modise said the department was nevertheless encouraged by the increased number of arrests and convictions made this year to counter rhino poaching.

Since January this year 89 people have been arrested for illegal activities in rhino horn in the country.

Twenty-nine people were arrested in Mpumalanga, 20 in the KNP, and 15 in the North West province.

In 2011 a total of 232 people were arrested in connection with rhino poaching.

Releasing the latest figures, Modise said the KNP continued to be the biggest victim of rhino killed illegally.

He said a suspected poacher was shot dead in the KNP and two others arrested last week.

A fifth KNP official, stationed at the Pretoriuskop section of the park, had been arrested.

Modise said SANParks, in conjunction with the police, were working non-stop to determine if there were links with other KNP officials to the two rhino killed in Pretoriuskop last month.

The KNP lost 252 rhinos to poaching last year.

Modise urged South Africans to report incidents of rhino poaching.

our ass-hole gorvenment is not doin enough on the rhino issue. the time they start acting seriously it wil be too late.the rhino species would gone into extinction. what is our tax money paying the military for? for sittin their butts down. there has never been a war in south africa. why dnt we take the militory into Kruger and the borders. USA would hv delt with the poachers with full force. stu-pid shower man.

In Botswana at the Khama Rhino Sanctuary they have a 100% success rate in their anti-poaching unit. Not a single rhino has been poached since the unit was set up and their rhino population is growing consistently - the secret to their success? The army is involved in the unit and they have the right to shoot to k*ill. So no-one wants to poach their rhinos. Why would they when they can simply cross the border and poach those in a country where the criminals have more rights than law-abiding citizens?

The sad truth. Our laws are too lenient. The way we are so soft and don't protect our environment and citizens; I fear that the security of our country is at risk. :(

I don't think those people do care about the environment. Al that they care about is erect fancy buildings, fancy roads and drive posh cars. As for animals, farms and forests, rivers they just don't care about those. I think last year there was a river or damn where the fish were dying because of contaminated water. What will they say? We are investigating it it is not a crisis at them moment. I really, really despise those words when it come to the fat ones.
