Priests in court battle over church

THE dispute over who is the legitimate resident priest of a Methodist Church in Africa branch is to be settled in court.

An application by Reverend HO Mqaba for the eviction of Reverend Simon Molokwane was postponed indefinitely in the Randfontein Magistrate's Court yesterday.

A similar application by Molokwane against Mqaba will be heard by the same court tomorrow.

The eviction of Mqaba is supported by regional Bishop Shadrack Phakwane.

Bishop Phakwane, who heads the region in Gauteng, has also been cited in at least two other court cases involving different branches of the church, popularly known as Tonki.

Mqaba was forcibly removed from the church premises on February 11 by a few members of the congregation.

He is now being accommodated by a sympathetic member of the congregation as the row rages on.

Magistrate Ferreira Strydom yesterday postponed the case brought by Mqaba for the eviction of Molokwane.

Mqaba contends that his eviction was unconstitutional as it is also against a decision of the church council.

He and other members of the congregation also have a peace and restraining order against their opponents.

Magistrate Strydom reserved judgment on costs.
