On Tuesday and Wednesday, consumers told they need to 'reduce the demand' by 40%
Durban’s water supplies will take a dip next week, when a reservoir outlet will be shut down for upgrading, eThekwini municipality said on Friday.
Senior manager for water operations Bhavna Soni said the co-operation of consumers would be critical on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“We will be supplying water, but from an alternative source. Thus the water available will be restricted, so they [consumers] need to reduce the demand by 40%,” Soni said.
“Do not waste water in any way, and postpone any intensive water usage for the 48 hours. If people do not save water our reservoirs will go empty, and then to bring the system back up to normal may take a week.”
Soni urged residents to not wash their cars, water their gardens, or fill up their swimming pools on the two days.
If people adhered to these requests, the shutdown would not have a noticeable impact, she said.
Affected areas to the north included Durban North, Virginia, Phoenix and Umhlanga. In the central area, Umlazi, Northdene and Chatsworth would be affected.
The restriction was for a period of 48 hours, on March 6 and March 7, Soni said.
