Man on trial for trading in ARVs

A Plattekloof man accused of illicit trading in antiretroviral drugs appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate's Court.

The trial of James Buckley, 51, of Johanna Close, Plattekloof, near Cape Town, was postponed to April 16. He is out on R5000 bail.

Edwin Grobler, for Buckley, told the court the matter had already been on the court roll for four months, and that it would remain on the roll for much longer unless he intervened urgently.

He said he needed to negotiate with senior prosecutor Ronel de Jager, at the Bellville Regional Court, and that he hoped to have the case transferred to the Regional Court when Buckley made his fourth appearance on April 16.

According to the charge sheet, Buckley faces two charges -- one involving an alleged violation of the Medicines and Related Substances Act, and the other relating to the alleged manufacture and distribution of scheduled medicines without a licence.

He was arrested in November.

Buckley is alleged to have distributed and sold the medicines Viramine, Epivir, Copegus, Combivir and Viracepts in October 2009.
