EDUCATION in Gauteng this year will be focussed on improving performance in the intermediate and senior phase.

Gauteng MEC for education Barbara Creecy yesterday announced that for the first time they would expand interventions to target the transition from primary to high school, the intermediate (Grade 4 to 7) and senior phase (Grade 8 and 9).

"We have developed a catch-up programme for Grade 8s to ensure that learners are at the required level of development for English and mathematics," Creecy said.

Pupils will be given backpacks with dictionaries; study material for maths and English; reading record cards and writing journals.

The department is also recruiting 460 coaches to support literacy and numeracy in primary schools. This is an increase from last year's 124 coaches in the foundation phase. They made about 40000 class visits. Coaches are responsible for at least six schools.

During the April holidays homework coaches will support pupils in primary schools.

At least 2075 Grade 10, 11 and 12 maths and science teachers were trained and they will continue to receive quarterly training.

Creecy said progress was being made in meeting the target of 5000 Grade R sites by 2014. This year, 312 new sites have been registered.
