ANCYL branch recalls its leader

Provincial secretary: Jacob Lebogo

Accused of supporting a clique that seeks to oust league president Julius Malema's political ally

THE ANC Youth League branch at the University of Limpopo's Turfloop campus has recalled its leader, Simon Rammutla, as president of the Students' Representative Council.

Rammutla was accused of supporting a clique that seeks to oust league president Julius Malema's political ally and friend Jacob Lebogo as provincial secretary. This comes after Malema's coterie headed by Lebogo disbanded the league's leadership in the Peter Mokaba region following disputes on leadership change.

Rammutla was recalled on Monday after the league's annual general meeting complained that he defied the ruling by the league's upper structure to disband the region a month ago.

"Rammutla belonged to a small group of people who do not recognise the decision by the provincial leadership that disbanded the region," said Langu Shiviti, the branch's secretary yesterday.

"The resolution also decrees that all branches must be re-launched. We are only implementing the resolution of the leadership in the province and we have a new structure in place wherein Rammutla was not re-elected," he said.

But Rammutla was still adamant yesterday that he remained the sitting president of the students at the university.

"This is just a smear campaign orchestrated by the frustrated Lebogo after realising that he was losing [his] grip in the politics of the province," said Rammutla.

The league, under the leadership of Malema's lieutenant Frans Moswane, took a decision to disband the region last month.

The move was, however, seen by others as a political ploy by Lebogo and Malema to oust those who did not support them politically.

"We are saying no amount of threats or intimidation would deter us from reinforcing our campaign to replace Lebogo," Rammutla said.

"We remain resolute in our call for Lebogo's replacement."

The league will hold its provincial elective conference in April in Sekhukhune, where Lebogo will battle it out with former league regional leader, Eddie Maleka, for the position of provincial secretary.
