A girl died following a seizure at her school in the west of Johannesburg, the Gauteng department of education said on Friday.
“It was after PE (physical education class) on Thursday as she was walking towards the swimming pool. She had a seizure and the school called paramedics,” spokesman Charles Phahlane said.
Two teachers tried to resuscitate her as they waited for paramedics.
“The paramedics arrived, but they could not save her life.”
Phahlane said the department had sent officials to the school to investigate what happened. It also sent trauma councillors.
The cause of death would be determined after a post-mortem.
Phahlane would not name the school.
