Metro's headquarters to cost R2-billion

Feb 9, 2012 | Sapa | 35 comments

A building will be leased for about R1.9-million a month until the new building is ready - and this cost is not included in the R2-billion price tag

THE new headquarters for the Tshwane metro will cost the city a maximum of R2-billion over the next 25 years, a spokesman said .

Tshwane metro spokesman Pieter de Necker said the project entails demolishing the old Munitoria building in Pretoria's CBD and erecting a new office block.

The Munitoria building was partially destroyed in a fire in 1997.

De Necker said staff housed in the building were being relocated to a new building.

This building would be leased for about R1.9-million a month until the new building - to be known as Tshwane House - had been completed.

This monthly lease is not included in the R2-billion price tag.

Tshwane House is being built in partnership with a consortium which will own the building for 25 years after its completion, after which ownership will revert to the municipality.

This sounds all reasonable. However never trust politicians. It might work out like they say but them we might discover later that there was a 50% escalation clause or that they had to pay R10m a month for "services". Be on guard.

Some ANC top dawgs' lavish life style is hereby declared insured for 25 years.

There's plenty of municipal land, why can't they build their own and not lease it?
