Mathale's number is up
CASSEL Mathale's leadership of the ANC in Limpopo will come under scrutiny this weekend, but this time at the ANC national executive committee meeting.
The NEC will discuss allegations levelled at Mathale, pictured, and his allies in Limpopo on how they allegedly "stole" the provincial conference in December.
The meeting will also discuss policy documents that will be released to ANC members before month-end and President Jacob Zuma will give a political overview.
The NEC started its four-day meeting yesterday in Pretoria
Sowetan understands that ANC members and NEC members who attended the conference compiled a damning report, giving examples of various incidents during the Limpopo conference to prove their case.
Mathale and his allies won the conference with Soviet Lekganyane taking over as provincial secretary and embattled ANCYL leader Julius Malema being elected into the provincial executive committee.
The report was compiled by deployed NEC member Mathole Motshekga but party members from regions, including Vhembe and Waterberg, have also sent reports to ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe.
In the report they say the conference adopted 1137 delegates.
When NEC member Dina Pule announced the results of chairman, she read that 19 people abstained from voting, there were seven spoilt ballots but in the end 1120 voted.
This means the total number of those who voted was 1146 and the figure is more than the adopted number of voting delegates.
The report also revealed how other delegates were allowed into the conference with fake accreditation cards.
The members claimed all accreditation cards had bar codes and pictures but the fake cards did not have that.
They called on NEC to disband Mathale's ANC provincial executive committee but there is a general feeling among NEC members that the move will lead to further divisions in that province.
Sowetan has been informed that Mathale and his provincial leadership met with ANC leaders, who included Zuma, his deputy Kgalema Motlanthe and Mantashe on Tuesday.
Sowetan, however, could not establish if the meeting discussed the report.
Zuma normally uses his political overview to emphasis unity in the organisation. He is expected to speak on that and the importance of ANC NEC members leading in the branches during the discussions of policy documents.
The meeting will receive different presentations of policy documents from NEC sub-committee members.
The documents have to be released for branches for discussions this month in preparation for policy conference to be held in June.
The meeting will not discuss Malema's appeal, which is before the ANC national appeal's committee.
It is expected that the committee, chaired by Cyril Ramaphosa, will uphold the ANC national disciplinary committee decision that Malema be suspended from the ANC for five years.

Watch how this one unfolds carefully as it could set a precedent for actions higher up. They hoped Mathale would be voted out but since it did not work, they are trying the technical route. I think another disciplinary hearing and recall could be on the cards.Report Abuse

This probes against Zuma's enemies is sickening me big time....
1. Why is Gwede not being investigated for cooking the local elections candidate list?
2. What happened to the case of Cele regarding the police buildings? Seems to have quieten down mysteriously.
If the anti-Zuma are always being victimized for not being Zuma's yes men/women, I think we are going to end up with another ANC split in December. And this time, unlinke COPE, is going to be really the beginning of the end of the ANC.
