Broke ANC can't pay salaries

Feb 3, 2012 | Frank Maponya | 355 comments

ANC employees in Limpopo have for the first time not been paid their monthly salaries.

Worried employees at Franse Mohlala House, the ANC's provincial headquarters in Polokwane, told Sowetan they were usually paid on the 25th of each month - but by yesterday they had still not been paid.

They alleged that the ANC had sent them from pillar to post whenever they enquired about their salaries.

Speaking on condition of anonymity the workers told Sowetan that they first approached Jan Ramabula, the ANC's administrative manager, who could not give them answers.

They also claimed they were not paid bonuses in December, as has been the norm in previous years.

"The problem is that no one dares to explain to us what challenges there are with regards to our salaries," said a concerned employee, who wanted to remain anonymous.

"Imagine having to spend the festive season without a bonus, only to be without a salary in January when everybody needs it. This is pure exploitation. We want our money," the source said.

Approached for comment yesterday, ANC provincial spokesman Makonde Mathivha said he was not in a position to speak on "confidential" matters.

"I cannot speak about issues that affect employees of the party as those are confidential issues between the workers and their employer. If the workers have issues they must raise them with their employer," he said.

The provincial leadership of the ANC recently went with a begging bowl to traditional leaders, asking for funds for the provincial centenary celebrations in Sekhukhune last month.

They were offered 15 cows by traditional leaders. At the time, the ANC claimed that most of its money had been used during the provincial elective conference in December, and they had also had to transport party members to Bloemfontein for the centenary celebrations.

How are provincial offices of the ANC funded ? Are they receiving a monthly or yearly subsidy from Luthuli House ? Or are they using the provincial membership fees and subscription to pay for its employees ?

Wonder what is going on really. Are the Limpopo staff being "sensitised" about who is the boss - other provinces don't seem to be affected. What happened to the takings from the cigar lounge in Polokwane and the profits from Chancellor House.

If one has issues with employer, they would go to the employer 1st before going to the papers. According to the report there has been no breakdown in communications between employee and employer and no case has been logged with the CCMA. Either the anonymous worker is full of it or the sowetan is.
