Fears of more taxi strife

MEN believed to be taxi drivers allegedly robbed taxi drivers from Dobsonville Roodepoort Leratong Johannesburg Taxi Association (Dorljota) on the West Rand yesterday morning, sparking fears that there could be more taxi violence in the area.

Gauteng traffic police spokesman Obed Sibasa said it was reported to them that occupants of a white Toyota Siyaya, driving without a registration number, robbed Dorljota taxi drivers of their takings along Hendrick Potgieter Road.

This is the same route on which a taxi owner was killed in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday.

A bystander and an occupant of one of the vehicles involved in the shooting were wounded.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said yesterday that the murdered taxi operator had not yet been identified.

The attack is alleged to be the work of Dorljota's long-time rivals - Faraday Taxi Association. The two associations have been fighting over the routes between Johannesburg and West Rand areas such as Roodepoort and Clearwater for a long time.

Following the shooting the police conducted a raid at the Bree Street taxi rank in Johannesburg city centre.

Sibasa said drivers and operators who were operating illegally fled and left 37 taxis.

"We removed the discs. Those vehicles are being monitored by the police and we know they will come back for their licences," Sibasa said.

He said a total of 71 taxis were impounded for various faults.

Ndou said both taxi associations involved in the feud said they did not know the man who was killed.

He said police were investigating a case of murder and two of attempted murder.
