Chiefs goalie assault case withdrawn

Will go for mediation with his estranged wife

ASSAULT charges against Kaizer Chiefs' number two goalkeeper, Arthur Bartman, have been withdrawn.

Bartman, 39, was arrested in June last year after he allegedly assaulted his estranged wife Arriette, 36, at their home in Buccleuch, north of Johannesburg.

Randburg Magistrate's Court prosecutor Arnold Limekhaya yesterday withdrew the charge for mediation.

"The matter was set for plea and trial. However, the State has decided to withdraw the charges for mediation," Limekhaya told Magistrate Silas Boloka.

Bartman, who is from Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, looked nervous as he sat in court.

Wearing black trousers, matching belt and shoes, and a grey-striped shirt, he stood quietly and had his eyes fixed on the floor.

Bartman's advocate C Smith said she did not have any objections to the court's decision.

It was alleged that the soccer star insulted and slapped his wife, then kicked her in the ribs and hips during an argument while he was removing his clothes from the house.

During the fight, Bartman is also said to have kicked the family puppy in the mouth when it began biting him, causing the dog to bleed.

His wife, who has one child with Bartman, left the court in a hurry.

Bartman declined to comment on the matter outside court.

The couple is in the process of getting divorced.
