Artwork worth R500,000 has been stolen from the Johannesburg Art Gallery in the past year
Five pieces of art, by Jules Dalou, Tracey Rose, Ernest Ullman, Sydney Khumalo and Romano Romanelli, disappeared over the past 12 months.
The Dalou piece, named “Genl Lazare Hoche”, is a bronze sculpture dating from the late 19th century.
The 71-centimetre work, worth R250,000, was stolen from the gallery on Wednesday, January 12.
Curator Antoinette Murdoch told an Afrikaans daily that the stolen pieces were irreplaceable.

sekhebereshe: The painting is actually a sculpture, but I would tend to agree with you. 71 cm bronze is NOT LIGHT, and is rather bulky. One wonders how it was sneaked past security cameras and numerous guards, if there was no collusion inside.Report Abuse
