Taxi boss shot dead outside his mansion

PROMINENT Tzaneen taxi association boss Risky Mobai was gunned down at the weekend shortly after arriving at his Bolobedu mansion.

The death of Mobai, chairman of the Bolobedu Long Distance Taxi Association, comes barely two weeks after a truck of his was set alight.

The truck was burnt out a fortnight ago by unknown men at nearly the same time as Sunday's incident in GaMatshwi village near Mokwakwaila in the greater Letaba municipality.

Mobai, 38, who also owned a fleet of taxis that operated between Rabie Ridge and Alexandra in Johannesburg, was allegedly shot several times in the body and hands after parking his car at his home at about 8pm.

Mobai was coming from Gauteng where he worked when two unknown men entered the yard and without any provocation opened fire.

His family told Sowetan yesterday that Mobai had just stepped out of the car and was answering his cellphone when he was sprayed with a hail of bullets.

Limpopo police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto confirmed the incident and said investigations were continuing.

"We have not made any arrest so far and the cause of the killing has not yet been established," Otto said.

"We plead with members of the community to help us with any information that could lead to the arrest of the killers."

The deceased's brother, Forrie Mobai, told Sowetan yesterday that Risky was killed by those pursuing a personal vendetta against him in the taxi industry.

"It is not a coincidence that his truck was set alight a fortnight ago at the same venue and time and that two weeks later he was killed," he said.

"We know he had enemies in the industry and we will work with the police to ensure that his killers are put behind bars."

Family spokesman Selby Mobai said Risky's funeral would be held at the family's home in GaMatshwi on Saturday.

The service will start at 6am and the cortege will leave for the family graveyard in Miniekloof outside Tzaneen.
