DA: charities losing lotto funding to ANC

Jan 26, 2012 | Thabo Mokone | 6 comments

THE DA has called for the National Lotteries Act to be amended in order to rid the lotteries board of perceived political interference.

DA MP Jacques Smalle, who also serves on parliament's trade and industry portfolio committee, yesterday said his party had noted a growing trend where needy charities were being overlooked by the lotto's board in favour of ANC-aligned organisations.

Smalle said his party would also ask parliament to change the way board members of the lottery board's fund distributing agencies were being appointed because currently, he claimed, these structures were being headed by people with links to the ANC. Smalle told journalists in Cape Town that 16 needy organisations in the Eastern Cape were last year denied funding by the board because they received money in previous years.

The lotteries board came under fire last year when it signed off a R1-million cheque towards a bash to mark Cosatu's 25th anniversary.

Smalle said the DA would like to see the public being the sole nominator of lottery board members, with Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies making the appointments in consultation with Parliament.

In terms of the current practice board members can only be appointed by the minister.

@imthegreatest
The simple fact that the board is can only be appointed by the minister tells you that they probably are anc cadres.
It should be totally independent - that is the only way it will work.

Nish

Why should audits not be done?? The only reason we would object to audits is if there is something to hide. Audits reveals all the corruptions which happens!! People need to know that they are being ripped off!!
The last time i checked apartheid was over in 1994. We were called the rainbow nation. Why is it that now years after the struggle we still refer to each other as white and black?? What does that have to do with issues at hand?? Doe sthis mean that the struggle that was fought by Mandela and the rest of our heros where in vain??
