Government workers 'got 50% of tenders'

FREE State government has issued close to 50% of its tenders to government employees or families of politicians.

This was revealed recently by Auditor-General Terence Nombembe.

The report also stated that there was still much to be done to address deficient asset management processes and practices in the province, while the prevalence and magnitude of irregular expenditure incurred by 11 departments and three public entities were unacceptably high.

Premier Ace Magashule's spokesman William Bulwane said they could not respond to a general statement.

"The Auditor-General does not say which departments are accused. We can only respond when he has identified which departments and government employees are involved," he said yesterday.

The Democratic Alliance in the province yesterday raised concerns about the A-G's findings.

Roy Jankielsohn, who leads the party in the province's legislature, accused the province of contravening sections of the Constitution.

He said since September 2007 the A-G issued a performance audit of entities that were connected with government employees and who were doing business with government departments.

"Currently we are not aware of any prohibition or restriction on employees of the Free State provincial government from having business interests in entities that conduct business with the provincial government."

The A-G found out that between 2009 and 2010 several departments and public entities in the province did not meet the reporting and regulatory requirements on service delivery.
