Unions slam audit results

THE findings of the auditor-general's annual government audit are "scandalous" and heads should roll, trade unions and the DA said yesterday.

"This is a serious crisis because service delivery is highly dependent on proper financial controls and accountable and transparent expenditure," the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) said.

The Federation of Unions of SA urged the government to stop "cadre deployment" and to curb corruption in local, provincial and national government.

The DA in Gauteng said financial management in the province was "seriously deficient". Irregular, unauthorised and wasteful spending in Gauteng was among the highest in the country, the party said.

Auditor-General Terence Nombembe released his 2010/11 report this week. He has voiced concern about all but three of the 39 national government departments. However, he was happy with their overall improvement in performance.

Nehawu spokesman Sizwe Pamla said over R20-billion of taxpayers' money had been wasted and misused.
