Bite is not murder

He bit a security guard in the hand and the man subsequently died of blood poisoning

A Centurion guesthouse owner has been acquitted of murder after he bit a security guard in the hand and the man subsequently died of blood poisoning, according to a report on Tuesday.

Olushola Talabi, 42, was acquitted of the murder of Andrew Yusuf, 40, in the Pretoria Regional Court on Monday, the Beeld reported.

This was after magistrate David Makhoba ruled that there was no way Talabi could have known that this would been the consequence. There was also no evidence of pre-meditated murder.

Yusuf died in 2010 of complications and multiple organ failure after the wound became septic.

This was six days after the two men attacked each other over an altercation at the guesthouse.

Talabi’s legal team had argued in court that Yusuf was the aggressor and that Talabi was merely defending himself.

I have read that human and swine bites are of the most difficult to treat, as the teeth are not as sharp as those of most other carnivores. There is not so much a "clean" bite as severe crushing of the tissue, and given the omnivorous variety we consume, quite a lot of bacteria is secreted in our mouths. A human bite can thus cause very serious damage.
