Accused cop hops from court to court

A YOUNG police officer attached to the Moroka police's tactical response unit hopped from one courtroom to another in the Protea Magistrate's Court yesterday. Constable Trevor Mbhalati, 27, appeared in different courts for attempted murder and in another for armed robbery.

The two cases are not linked.

First he appeared for allegedly shooting Jose Dionesio in Protea, Soweto, on December 8 last year. Mbhalati and a colleague were on patrol when they saw Dionesio riding a bicycle. The officer tried to stop him.

Mbhalati claims he shot Dionesio because he put his hand near his hip and he thought the man was drawing a gun.

The case was postponed to next Monday.

Mbhalati and eight others, including two cops, appeared over armed robbery.

Their appearance follows an incident on December 9 when they allegedly dressed in police and security uniforms and stormed into the offices of the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association in White City, Soweto.

There they held security guards at gun-point and stole R160000 in cash from a safe.

The other accused are Sergeant Brenda Letshele, 35, Constable Rabelani Tshitakole, 29, former constable reservists Innocent Sikhosana, 27, Bongani Mpakane, 31, France Sithole, 35, Silas Mosima, 58, Ephraim Madondo, 47, and Fumani Shishenge, 47.

The case was also postponed to Monday.
