'We are tired of watching American sex'

IT was the yearnings of South Africans that sparked the creation of the illicit and controversial local sex website [name removed]. This is according to a Pretoria-based woman who has come forward to identify herself as promoter of the site.

The site gained massive coverage late last year when Sowetan discovered that it was circulating child pornography and rape videos. The videos had been shot by cellphone.

The site is currently under investigation by the cyber policing and intellegence unit of the SAPS.

It boasts more than 500 videos of South Africans engaging in sexual acts and more than 14,000 images.

IsiZulu, seSotho and tshiVenda are some of the languages that can be heard in the videos.

The person who claims to have made this possible is a woman who calls herself "Mzansi Pev". She promotes the site through her Facebook page and other social networks.

She said her friends do the same.

"We love porn and we are tired of watching American sex," she said. She said users had shown a growing interest in watching Mzansi people "do their thing".

"The site is more popular now and it is even more difficult to log in at times because of site congestion," Pev said.

"Most importantly the love of sex inspires the site, and that is why we are pushing local content," she said.

Pev said she had helped to find more than 40,000 users for the site.

"There are no terms and conditions, nor is there a subscription fee. You only register with a user name to use the site," she said.

Pev refuted claims that the website was being run from outside by Russia.

She declined to give her real name, picture or age to Sowetan, citing security issues.

The child pornography and rape videos have been removed since Sowetan broke the story.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed that they were making progress in their investigation.

National police spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Tumi Shai said: "We are following up on leads that we got from the website."

She did not agree that the site was entirely locally run. "The site is being run from outside the country and if we had to make arrests it would be a joint operation."

"We cannot divulge more information ... except to say the cyber police are making tremendous progress with regard to the site."
