PLATINUM Stars midfielder Joseph "Tight" Molangoane found himself on the wrong side of the law on Tuesday after he was caught speeding.

Molangoane, 23, who hails from Kgohloane village in Moletji, Limpopo, was caught driving at 214kmh in a 60kmh zone near Bela-Bela.

Traffic officers in the area stopped Molangoane in his Mini Cooper S on the N1 south between Kranskop and Mantsole at about 8.50am.

He was handed over to Bela-Bela police, who detained and charged him with reckless driving and speeding. He appeared in the Bela-Bela Magistrate's Court and was granted R2000 bail. His case will resume on January 10.

Molangoane is on the wanted list of top clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates after impressing in his maiden season at Dinaledi.

He joined the club at the beginning of the season on loan from African Sport Youth Development Academy that is owned by Harold "Jazzy Queen" Legodi.

Approached for comment yesterday, Platinum Stars' team manager Obed Legobathe said it would be premature for him to issue a statement since the matter was in the hands of the police.

Meanwhile, the death toll on national roads has exceeded the 1000 mark.

Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesman Ashref Ismail said from December 1 to December 26 there were 1023 fatalities from 853 crashes across the country, mostly through speeding. Some of the well-known personalities that were arrested for speeding in recent times include:

  • Metro FM presenter DJ Sbu, who recorded the highest speed at 257kmh in a 120kmh zone on the N1 highway in 2007. He was fined R7000.
  • In January Free State MEC for sport, arts, culture and recreation Dan Kgothule was caught doing 235kmh on the N1 highway in Glen, outside Bloemfontein. He was fined R20000.
  • In July SuperSport United defender Jeffrey Ntuka was caught doing 188kmh on the N1 outside Kroonstad.
