Soweto wants own municipality

THE Municipal Demarcation Board is expecting to receive more proposals regarding new municipal boundaries next year.

The board has extended its deadline to January 20 after receiving 160 applications.

Among other applications the board has received is a proposal by a group of Sowetans to have the township declared a local municipality.

Soweto, with almost a million residents, currently falls under the City of Joburg Metro Council.

Chief executive of the board, Hillary Monare, yesterday told Sowetan it would be unfair for him to comment.

"It will be unfair for me to prejudge the application before it is tabled before the entire board."

He stressed submissions should be considered as proposals and should not be interpreted as confirmation until a decision has been made.

The group behind the Soweto proposal, Hola Bon Renaissance Foundation, wants the township to be excluded from the City of Joburg and be declared a stand-alone municipality.

The HBR argue in their application that should the township be granted the status of a municipality, it would be able to develop infrastructure, grow the economy and create jobs.

The municipal boundary re-determination process is expected to be concluded in 2013.
