Nando's pulls Mugabe ad

By Sapa | Dec 02, 2011 | COMMENTS [ 48 ]

THE "Last dictator standing" TV commercial currently running in South Africa will be cancelled, the Nando's restaurant chain said

"We've noted with concern the political reaction emanating from Zimbabwe, including perceived threats against Nando's Zimbabwe's management, staff and customers," the company said.

On Tuesday a militant youth group loyal to Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe called for a boycott of Nando's because of the ad.

Nando's SA said it had taken these threats very seriously and would no longer flight the TV commercial as part of its festive season campaign.

"We feel strongly that this is the prudent step to take in a volatile climate and believe that no TV commercial is worth risking the safety of Nando's staff and customers."

The commercial shows Mugabe dining alone at Christmas, his empty table set for departed dictators, including Muammar Gaddafi.

To the soundtrack of Mary Hopkins hit song 'Those Were the Days', the commercial shows an actor playing Mugabe reminiscing about his times with former dictators. It portrays him and Gaddafi engaging in a water pistol fight, AND with Gaddafi wielding an AK-47 rifle.

Mugabe also makes sand angels with Iraq's Saddam Hussein, sings karaoke with Chairman Mao, and holds overthrown Ugandan dictator Idi Amin astride a tank.

The head of Nando's Zimbabwe franchise said it was not told of the SA TV and press campaign.

It is an offence under Zimbabwean law to insult Mugabe or undermine the authority of his office.

uys, the truth of the matter is that you hate Mugabe because he has the balls to stand up to the Brits and the Yankies!!!!!!

I am always stunned when I hear these “he stands up to ...” comments. Don’t you get it, Mugabe has destroyed a functioning economy, ruined Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector through thieving and bought patronage disguised as land redistribution now not even Zimbabweans want the Zimbabwean dollar which has thankfully been scrapped as it become a source of embarrassment.

All this was done “to show them” but what has he achieved at the end of the day? What has he achieved? Tony Blair went on to finish his term, the UK’s economy is still going strong and I have not heard of British people being forced to eat grass (the same goes for the US), besides completely destroying his country what has Mugabe achieved that shows he has been engaged in a just fight?

As much as i hate Bush and Blair with passion, how do they fit in this equation?
Nandos is a business enterprise that makes money by selling food. How can a businessenterprise be in cahoots with media like BBC et al? Your argument doesn't make sense at all. That's typical of a man who turn a blind eye on African dictators who uses state machinery to murder their own people.
Well it can do so by marketing political ideas that encourages the murder of specific leaders of African,Arab and Muslim origin, who have been found guilty of the very same crimes as the ones perpetrated by Imperial political activists, under the camouflage of Liberty and economic prosperity. By the way, Nandos not only makes money by selling food, but sells political ideas too. And you just bought one of the ideas yourself.

I use to love their chickens, but since their funny ads, starting from Malema's one, then I stoped buying the meat, I will rather buy and braai myself, and i do better than them so far. I hate ads that don't respect other people. I so wish they ban those outlets in Zim, then we will see who win the battle.
