Community arrests after child killer is murdered

Group of 2,000 pelted him with stones and other objects until he died, after he pointed out where the 7-year-old girl's body was

Three people were arrested on Wednesday for the mob murder of a suspected child killer in Kwanokuthula, outside Plettenberg Bay, earlier this week.

Captain Malcolm Pojie said members of the Kwanokuthula detective  branch arrested two men early on Wednesday morning. A third man was arrested during an attempted burglary in Plettenberg Bay in the afternoon.

They would be charged in connection with the murder of 37-year-old Derrick Shwati on Monday.

“The arrests were made after information was followed up on the identity of the suspects,” Pojie said.

He said about 2000 people interrogated Shwati on Monday afternoon about a missing seven-year-old girl, Siphokazi Nini.

He led them to a deserted area and allegedly pointed out Nini’s body.

The child was reported missing on Sunday evening.

The mob attacked Shwati, pelting him with stones and other objects until he died.

The three are to appear in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a charge of murder.

Pojie said the investigation was continuing and more arrests were expected.

Also on Wednesday, about 300 people protested outside the Plettenberg Bay police station and demanded the release of two men accused of killing Shwati.

Police used stun grenades to disperse the protesters after they burned tyres on the street.
