Hospital staff accused of assaulting patients

Patients at a psychiatric hospital in the Eastern Cape claim they have been raped and assaulted by staff

“We have dispatched a team to the Tower Psychiatric Hospital to investigate these serious allegations,” said provincial health department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo.

The hospital is in the town of Fort Beaufort.

He said two patients claimed they were beaten up by nurses on Wednesday.

The department had also received complaints from two other patients who claimed they were raped last month by nurses working at the hospital.

The department took the allegations seriously and would take the  appropriate action against those found guilty, said Kupelo.

Police are also investigating.
