Join 'FoodBank' to help fight hunger

Nov 22, 2011 | Sowetan | 10 comments

SOWETAN-Pick n Pay Partnership against hunger:

SMS "foodbank" to 40421 to donate R20 instantly

  • About 20% of households - a staggering 11 million people - have inadequate access to food.
  • One in five children in South Africa under the age of nine suffers from stunted growth as a result of malnutrition.
  • That's why South Africa's priority in addressing poverty must be "Food First".
  • FoodBank was formed in 2009 to achieve the vision of "a South Africa without hunger and malnutrition".
  • In its first two years FoodBank SA donated 32 million meals worth an estimated R121-million.
  • FoodBank SA supplies food to 1059 other community based organisation countrywide.
  • These 1059 organisations have 203000 beneficiaries - mostly orphans and vulnerable children.
  • FoodBank SA is able to provide meals for just R1.68 per meal.
  • Don't wait, hunger doesn't.
  • Ways for the public to get involved: Join "wheels for meals" or "lose an inch for someone in a pinch" or "feat for food" of Fill the Gap Club?
  • Another way to help - host a dinner and let your friends pay what they thought the meal was worth and donate it to FoodBank.
  • SMS "foodbank" to 40421 to donate R20 instantly.

lamelooser

You must be joking.

Take the R2 000 000 000 that Gen Cele spent on unneeded police buildings and buy 1 billion meals, and you get change.

lamelooser stop talking nonsence.
This is a project by SOWETAN-Pick n Pay Partnership against hunger and has nothing to do with Government. If u dont want to contribute dont but shut the hell up and stop trying to poison other people as well.

@Lamewinner

The money gen Cele spent wasnt "allocated" as part of the budget you are suggesting.

Government money gets "allocated" at the beginning of a financial year. They make "budgets" and "approve" them and then "allocate" funds.

If they abuse the funds then they get dealt with, sometimes not.

@SOWETAN
How much of this foodbank money will be "taken" by Sowetan?

Are you in money crisis like the SABC? Hence their "improving lives" idea/ campaign?

Just checking

I have a solution to your finacial crisis- lets go back to Pick and Pay!

The problem with all these big fundraisers is that the donater isnt assured that his/her donation will actually reach the needy who need it. I am disgusted when Charity managers/workers etc drive around in fancy cars.

I once emailed the Social Services department asking if they connect me with a needy family that I could donate R200/groceries to every month. I am still waiting for that government department to get back to me.

If anyone knows of a gogo or a single mother who is struggling to feed her dependants: please email thulane23@gmail.com.

I am doing my bid to charity every month and i refuse to sms to a number that is only going to provide 10% of the earnings they receive whilst the balance goes into the pockets.
until ANC starts tracing funds that seem to go missing, we will continue to have issues of poverty in this country whilst the elite live in luxury.
Get the money back from Swaziland and feed your own people!

I refuse to contrubute, for a fact that there are still children dying of hunger somewhere out there it means you are not distributing evenly, only concentrating in joburg forgetting of places like bo North West, Bo gamphahlela

WalktheWalk

I've donated to FoodBank since its inception, know it well, and trust it. This initiative by the Sowetan and Pick n Pay is at their expense -- well done! -- and 100% of the proceeds go to FoodBank.

FoodBank is run independently and relies on donations. It is not a government initiative, although it has the support of government. It is run by staff who are paid NGO wages and by volunteers - it's laughable to think that anyone there drives a fancy car! FoodBank knows that hunger is national and it is working to provide a national solution. It's already helping in 8 places and all it needs to open around the country is funding. At present, it can provide one meal for every R1,68 it receives. Think about that. Can you find better value for a donation? I'm satisfied that 100% of my donations are well used.

The long walk to freedom from poverty will be a long one indeed if we don't join forces to get rid of the scourge of hunger. Please, don't just throw stones - act to help the hungry, whether through FoodBank or though any equally cost effective and honest initiative you can find. The alternative is to watch our neighbours starve because of inertia or cynicism.
