PUPILS at a technical school in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, have expressed shock after the arrest of a teacher for allegedly raping 11 children.

The 46-year-old teacher was arrested in connection with the rape of 11 girls aged between 15 and 18.

Police believe there might be more victims. The Gauteng department of education has called on pupils who might have been abused by the teacher to come forward.

Captain Pinky Tsinyane said: "The alleged abuse started around September. He lured his victims under the pretext that he will help them with their homework. Once they were alone, he would rape the girl left behind."

The arrest of the Grade 11 Physical Science teacher came after a girl told the shool's principal while they were being taught about abuse, including sexual abuse, that she had been raped by the teacher.

Another victim told her mother about her ordeal.

"They went to the police station and a case was opened," Tsinyane said.

A pupil at the school said: "This is bad because it affects children. The teacher gave them memoranda and supplied the girls with question papers before tests. He also passed them.

"It's shocking. He failed dismally to protect children. He was supposed to be their guardian, not sleep with them."

The girl said by providing his victims with question papers before writing was not going to help the pupils.

"He won't be there when they write their matric exams. He won't be able to get the question papers because they arrive in the morning. He was killing them," she said.

"He always asked girls if they had boyfriends. Those who said they did, he would treat badly and force them to dump their boyfriends so that he could have them," another pupil said.

The pupils alleged that the girls who refused to sleep with the teacher were treated badly, were beaten up and failed Physical Science.

GDE spokesman Charles Phahlane said if the allegations that the teacher passed pupils in exchange for sex were true, it was "outrageous".

"The head of department has placed the educator on precautionary suspension pending a disciplinary hearing.

"We appeal to learners to come forward with evidence.

"Those affected will receive counselling," Phahlane said.
