Magaqa ordered to apologise to Gigaba

IN a ruling likely to restrict ANC members from criticising cabinet ministers, the party's disciplinary committee has ordered Sindiso Magaqa of the youth league to apologise to Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba for defaming him.

Magaqa, secretary-general of the ANC Youth League, was ordered to apologise within five days.

The apology is part of the sentences meted out to the youth league leaders by the ANC national disciplinary committee.

Magaqa had accused Gigaba of "pleasing imperialists" after the minister had criticised the league's campaign for the nationalisation of mines in his address to the American Chamber of Commerce in August.

Committee chairman Derek Hanekom said Gigaba's position and responsibility in government was important for the attraction of investments.

"The respondent (Magaqa), as a member of the NEC of the ANC, should have been familiar with programmes of the ANC and government," Hanekom said.

"The unwarranted attack on Gigaba belittled and had the effect of potentially defaming him as a person."

Although Magaqa did not testify before the DC, former youth league secretary Vuyiso Tulelo and ANCYL spokesman Floyd Shivambu testified on his behalf.
