Nuns accused of assaulting kids

Children alleged to have been whipped with a pipe under their feet

TWO nuns and the head of a convent are expected to appear in the New Hanover Magistrate's Court in KwaZulu-Natal today following their arrest yesterday.

They are facing five charges of assault with intent to do bodily harm.

Five children boarding at a convent near Greytown in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands have accused the nuns of beating them. The alleged beatings happened between June last year and June this year.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said the convent housed 27 children. The children had been taken to a place of safety.

Jeevan said that police came to know about the alleged beatings when it was reported to them by a television investigation crew and they have since forwarded a docket to the public prosecutor.

"The children between the ages of 3 to 18 alleged to have been whipped with a pipe under their feet and others instructed by the nuns to whip other children," she said.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for social development, Meshack Radebe, visited the place yesterday and decided to immediately shut the convent down.

"There were no beds for children to sleep. They slept on the floor and only the nuns slept on beds. There was no kitchen or dining hall."
