Miss Venezuela takes the Miss World crown

MISS South Africa Bokang Montjane might not have brought the Miss World title home, but making it to the final 7 of the 113 world's best proved her mantle.

The 25-year-old Montjane, who hails from Johannesburg, pranced with confidence as she walked the stage at the auditorium of Earls Court Two in London.

She flashed a smile in a manner that the profession demands, before telling the world why she had put herself in line for the prestigious prize in the world of beauty.

"Miss World should go to a young woman of integrity and who is passionate.

"She should be part of the solution to problems in the communities and the world. That is why I want to be Miss World," Montjane said.

Though the Mandela magic could not rub off on her as Mandla Mandela, the grandson of the world-renowned statesman and former South African president Nelson Mandela, read his grandfather's message before the announcement of the top three, she might have had a feeling of accomplishment to have travelled that far.

Waving the South African flag, Mandla told the audience that his grandfather wished the contestants good luck. He said Mandela had supported initiatives by young people to change lives for the better.

As the final countdown continued, it was to be Miss Venezuela Ivian Sarcos who took the crown.

Miss Philippines Gwendoline Ruais was the first runner up while Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Perez, was the second runner up. With her win, Sarcos gave her country its sixth title as Miss World .

The 61st event was flighted live on SABC3 last night.
