A man was jailed for life on Friday after breaking the neck of a four-year-old girl while raping her.

   Passing sentence, Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Isaac Madondo said this was the worst crime of such a nature that he had encountered.

   In a guilty plea, 47-year-old Elphas Sigwebela, of Harding in southern KwaZulu-Natal, said he watched the girl playing in August this year.

   Her grandmother were deep in conversation with another woman, and he called the girl over and took her to his room.

   Sigwebela said she screamed when began her raping her, and he throttled the child to silence her. Afterwards, he noticed she was no longer breathing.

   “I hid her naked body under my bed, dressed and left.”    

Members of the community later realised she was missing and searched for her. They found her body under his bed.

   Sigwebela said he consumed alcohol that day, but knew what he was doing was wrong.    

The post mortem report showed that the girl died of a broken neck.

   Madondo imposed one life sentence for both crimes because they were committed at the same time and place.
