TBeeld and The Citizen newspapers had front-page pictures of the man outside the Margate police station in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday. He arrived there in a gold-coloured Mercedes Benz ML.
He allegedly kidnapped Louise de Waal in Roodepoort, north-west of Johannesburg, on Wednesday morning, before allegedly raping and killing her and setting her body alight on a farm in Magaliesburg in the North West.
According to newspaper reports he is Afrikaans-speaking, 35-years-old and married with a six-year-old son.
In 2007, when he received a suspended sentence for sexual assault, he worked as a distribution planner for a transport company in Kempton Park.
He is currently involved in a business which installs ceilings and skirting boards on the West Rand in Johannesburg.
The man has been linked to nine cases of rape and one of murder. The crimes were attributed to a man nicknamed the “Sunday rapist”.
He is due to appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday, police said.
“We can confirm that he is in Johannesburg, and that he is being kept at an undisclosed facility,” Lt-Col Tshisikhawe Ndou said on Friday.
On Thursday Gauteng police commissioner Maj-Gen Nobesuthu Masiya said lead investigator in the case, Warrant Officer Peet du Toit, contacted the man through his brother, and persuaded him to hand himself over.
