THE Department of Basic Education has announced that National Senior Certificate results will still be published by all accredited media.
The decision follows a meeting between the department and the South African National Editors Forum (Sanef). This after earlier reports that media houses had missed the September 30 deadline for accreditation to publish the results.
The department said the deadline had now been extended to October 26 to allow media institutions to study and agree to the Norms and Standards for the Public Release of the Results.
Department spokesman Panyaza Lesufi said they and Sanef would meet the Young Communist League (YCL) next week to address its concerns about the impact of releasing the results in newspapers.
The YCL had earlier said the exercise was responsible for the number of suicides committed by candidates who had failed.
Examination representatives from all provinces held a two-day meeting in Pretoria last week to discuss whether to continue with publishing the results in newspapers.
The SA Depression and Anxiety Group said there was no evidence to support that there was an increase in teenage suicides when matric results were released.
Matric examinations start on October 24 and finish on December 1. Marking in eight provinces will start on December 2, while Gauteng starts on November 9.
