Stay sober, teachers warned

REPORTING for duty drunk, corporal punishment and sexual assault are among the main reasons for the dismissal of teachers, the SA Democratic Teachers Union said yesterday.

Outgoing Sadtu chairman Ronny Morwatshehla warned more than 500 teachers from the six districts of Limpopo, on the first day of the union's 6th elective conference at Bolivia Lodge outside Polokwane, to guard against such notorious acts if they wanted to stay in the profession.

National chief operations officer of the SA Council of Educators, Matshidiso Dipholo, said Limpopo was one of the difficult provinces in which the council was unable to get reports on teacher offences.

Dipholo advised the union to report all offences committed by teachers. The conference ends today and will culminate in the election of a new leadership that is expected to lead the union for the next three years.
