Why Dr Love dumped Mbhoro

FORMER gay activist Dr Love says he has found a new spiritual home and is now a dedicated church choir member at Gracehouse Church in Randburg, Johannesburg.

Dr Love, real name Mveleli Gqwede, dumped infamous Prophet Paseka Motsoeneng Mbhoro's church in March this year to join his new church.

He says he is so strong spirituality that he has also reconnected with his ex-wife Nomxolisi Mji. They have two children.

Mji could not be reached for comment as her cellphone was off.

Dr Love has praised Mbhoro for leading him to Christ, which also led him to live a "straight life" again.

"God used him to deliver me from homosexuality and for that I will forever be grateful," he said.

Mbhoro said Dr Love did not tell him when and why he had left the church.

"Dr Love loves publicity, I do not want to entertain him."

Dr Love first became known when he got engaged and married Mji, but the couple later separated when he started showing interest in other men. He became a celebrity in the 1990s after openly campaigning for the rights of homosexual people.

He said he left Mbhoro's church because "the gospel of vuvuzelas and biscuits did not build me spiritually".

The flamboyant Dr Love surprised everyone when he denounced his homosexuality last year.

This left tongues wagging in gay circles, with some giving his new lifestyle less than a month to survive.

But he has managed to stay away from the party and gay scene.

He told Sowetan yesterday that he was working on his relationship with his ex-wife . The two have been apart since 2002 and had a highly publicised split.

"I want to go back to my ex-wife. She lives in Eastern Cape but occasionally comes and we spend time together. At the moment I am not dating anyone. She is the only woman I want in my life," he said.

His new church is led by Nigerian Pastor Chuks Ozabor.

"The church puts emphasis on grace and love but is also the loudest in rebuking homosexuality," Dr Love said.

He is part of a 10-man strong choir that ministers to church members at every service.

With his ears decorated with glittering studs and wearing a nicely fitting black suit bejewelled with gold stripes on the arms, one could not miss him on Sunday.
