SA in deal to combat poaching

SOUTH Africa and Vietnam have agreed to collaborate on wildlife protection and law enforcement.

At a media briefing yesterday, the Department of Environmental Affairs said a deal on finalising the memorandum of understanding to collaborate on natural resources management, wildlife protection and law enforcement had been entered.

The department said this was merely the first step in the process and they hoped to involve more consumer states such as China and Thailand.

The countries agreed that sharing information on such matters was key to combat poaching of any sort.

The deputy director-general of biodiversity and conservation Fundisile Mketeni said that one of the processes they planned to implement was tight verification mechanisms of hunters.

This year 309 rhinoceros were killed for their horns and 180 suspects arrested.

The head of the Vietnamese delegation, Tuan Cong Ha, expressed dismay overrumours that were making the rounds in Vietnam that rhino horns could be used to cure cancer.

He said they were awaiting laboratory results to prove this theory.

They had no intention of legalising the trade of rhino trophies, Mketeni said.
