Woman jailed for drugging babies at creche

A former creche owner, who sedated toddlers with a home-made solution containing sleeping pills, has been sentenced to five years in jail,

AKinderland creche owner Monica Helm, 65, was found guilty of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm by endangering and exposing helpless minors to drugs.

Somerset West Regional Court Magistrate Marylin Canoon said:

“This offence is serious. The accused is presented as the devil in disguise, and any offence against children is unforgivable.”

Helm also received a R1000 fine or six months imprisonment for running an unregistered creche.

Her assistant, Angelique Carolus, turned State witness against her in 2009, testifying that Helm had “precise plans to sedate the children”, aged three months to four years, with a home-made solution containing sleeping pills.

Helm remains out on bail pending an appeal.
