Mom of 17 to get a house
Family to get a new house plus separate RDP houses for the adult children
LIFE is expected to change for the better for the Limpopo woman who gave birth to 23 children at various times, with 17 of them surviving.
This follows Sowetan's report on the family's situation at Kotsiri village in Schoonoord, Sekhukhune.
The family of 33 had been living and sleeping in two tiny cramped RDP houses.
Provincial MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs Soviet Lekganyane said yesterday they had managed to get the thumbs up from a company that would build the family a new house, besides the RDP house they already have.
"We are working hard to improve the living conditions of the family as a way of reducing the burden on the woman," Lekganyane said.
He said of the woman's children, whose ages ranged from 18 and over, would also get separate RDP houses at their own sites.
"We have tasked the Makhuduthamaga local municipality to check how many children in the family will qualify for the RDP houses and then arrange with local traditional leaders to allocate them sites so that we can build the children houses," he said.
According to Lekganyane work had already started on a six-bedroom house for the family.
He expected the house to be completed in two months time.
"The idea is to make sure that the family enjoys fresh air after we have built the new house. But we are also not demolishing the already existing RDP house in the family because the new one is not being built on government expense," he explained.
Lekganyane said the new house was going to be built as part of a donation from one of the companies doing business with his department.
Eight children, born between 1979 and 1993, are set to benefit from the government's gesture.
Said Jane Sara Nkosi, the mother of the children: "I'm beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel after a foundation was laid to ensure that a new house would be built for me, my husband and our children," an ecstatic Nkosi said.
The unemployed woman, whose husband is also jobless, thanked Sowetan for highlighting her family's plight.
Makhuduthamaga municipality mayor Alfred Matlala said they would buy furniture once the new house was completed.
