Soweto principal accused of rape

A DEPUTY school principal at a secure care school for the rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents has been accused of raping one of them.

Daniel Sejamoholo, the deputy principal at the Walter Sisulu School in Noordgesig in Orlando, Soweto, allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl at the school last week.

He appeared in the Protea magistrate's court on Friday and the case was postponed.

The children at the school have been convicted of various crimes but, because they are too young to go to prison, are accommodated at the school.

A teacher at the school said: "This is so embarrassing for the school.

"We are supposed to help the children reform, but one of them ends up abused."

Orlando police spokesperson Warrant Officer Bongani Mhlongo confirmed the case. He said the principal was charged with rape.

"There was another case at the same school in which a 16-year-old pupil raped a 17-year-old girl," Mhlongo said.

"The boy was taken into custody and then released back to the school because he is a minor."

Gauteng education spokes- person Charles Phahlane said: "We are outraged by this incident and have placed the accused educator on precautionary suspension. We have scheduled counselling sessions for the learner.

"We view the allegations with grave concern. The counselling team is being sent to the school tomorrow (today) to support the victim.

"We are doing an independent legal investigation to find out what happened."

Lynne Cawood, director of ChildLine, said: "I am shocked and I believe this is an absolute tragedy. There should be a full inquiry to ensure that the other children are not affected.

"There is no profile of a rapist. Even if the departments of education and social development do checks with the police, it is very hard to ensure sexual predators are not in schools."
