Cele still in hospital

National police commissioner General Bheki Cele, who was admitted to hospital apparently for a routine medical check up three days ago, is still there

Zuid-Afrikaanse Hospital general manager Tienie van den Berg confirmed that Cele was still at the hospital on Wednesday. He could not comment on Cele’s condition.

Comment could not be immediately obtained from the SA Police Service but on Monday they issued a statement quoting Cele as saying that he “came to the hospital for a routine medical check-up  and I walked into this medical facility unaided”.

He said in the statement that he expected to remain in hospital for between 12 and 24 hours.

Police spokesman Colonel Vishnu Naidoo said in the same statement that the “routine general medical check-up” had ”warranted” the commissioner staying in the hospital for at least 24-hours.

The Beeld newspaper reported on Monday that Cele first went to the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Groenkloof with chest pains on Sunday afternoon, but he was later transferred via ambulance to the Zuid-Afrikaanse Hospital.

Cele has been in the news in recent months after two reports by the Public Protector accused him of acting unlawfully when signing lease agreements in Pretoria and Durban for police offices.
