'Cop becomes child porn ring-leader'

Hawks make arrest

The Hawks have arrested a former policeman believed to be the head of a national child porn ring which spread its material on the social media network, MXit, according to Rapport.

The 38-year-old man was arrested while trying to leave the country on Thursday last week, after a two-month long investigation.

“The pictures are very explicit,” Hawks spokeswoman McIntosh Polela told the paper.

He said the man left the police seven years ago. His identity was being withheld to protect the identity of his children, and because he had not yet been charged.

Polela said the Hawks were tipped off after the man allegedly offered explicit photos of young girls to a police source on MXit.

He would approach MXit users in the “Thirty Something” chat room.

The network apparently had members in Nelspruit, Johannesburg and Durban.

More arrests are possible.
