Court orderlies let 'Most Wanted' man just walk out

'DISAPPEARED' FROM COURT: Bongani Moyo
'DISAPPEARED' FROM COURT: Bongani Moyo

A DANGEROUS robbery suspect coolly limped out of the Pretoria magistrate's court yesterday and disappeared.

Police say Bongani Moyo was left unattended in a public space at the court before he vanished.

Moyo, who is facing a string of bank robbery charges, has left police baffled as to how he managed to leave the court without court orderlies noticing.

Police spokesperson Captain Katlego Mogale said they were working "around the clock" to re-arrest Moyo.

"We have learnt that Moyo was not kept in the court holding cells at the time. Instead he was seated outside the courtroom where he was supposed to appear," Mogale said.

She said police were investigating how and who could have aided Moyo who was on crutches.

"We want to establish why he was not kept in the holding cells and who ordered him to sit outside the courtroom.

"Our investigations will reveal how Moyo managed to escape," Mogale said.

She would not speculate on whether the blame rested with members of the police.

"At the moment we are trying to establish how he escaped."

Mogale said Moyo was appearing on one of his bank robbery charges when he escaped.

Police have appealed to anyone with information about Moyo's whereabouts to come forward.

Moyo made headlines when he escaped from Boksburg Prison in March. He was arrested two months later near the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo when he returned to South Africa for medical treatment from his native country, Zimbabwe.

Police have described Moyo as "dangerous" and linked him to about 34 bank robberies.

Other suspects arrested in May were Khumbulani (KB) Sibanda, 37, and his cousin Thabane (Ogies) Sibanda, 27, during a raid in Johannesburg. Four other people, including a prison warder, were also arrested.
