Traffic cop father beats up teachers

A TOP traffic officer in Mpumalanga's Nkomazi municipality faces arrest after he allegedly assaulted two teachers who went to his home to inform him about his son's misdemeanours at school.

The teachers sustained head and body injuries when they were forced at gunpoint to lie down and were repeatedly kicked and clobbered with a knobkerrie.

Hlanganani Vukeya and Kenneth Mashaba, Grade 9 teachers at Hanyane Secondary School in Magudu village, thought going to see the father would be the right thing to do since they expected it to improve the son's behaviour at school.

Vukeya said: "When the child gave us problems we informed his father by phone and he insisted that we come and speak to him face to face.

"Mashaba and I were surprised when, while approaching the gate, (the suspect) drew his service pistol and ordered us to lie down.

"He said his child had reported how abusive we were to him and that he was going to teach us a lesson."

Vukeya said while they were lying down they were handcuffed and beaten until they were rescued by community members.

The teachers said the child, a Grade 9 pupil, never did his schoolwork.

"We gave the pupils homework last Friday and by Tuesday he had still not done it. When we asked him why he did not do the task, the child became aggressive and accused us of ill-treating him," Mashaba said.

Mashaba said the child then left the classroom and reported him to the principal.

"The principal dismissed him, saying he needed to exhaust internal processes first. This meant he first had to report his dissatisfaction to his class teacher and then to the head of department. If the HOD failed to resolve the issue, he could report it to the deputy principal and the principal if needs be."

Vukeya and Mashaba yesterday laid a charge at the local police station.

Nkomazi police spokesperson Mzwandile Nyambi has confirmed a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm had been opened against the traffic officer.

"The police net is about to close in on him," Nyambi said.

Sadtu national spokesperson Nomusa Cembi yesterday condemned the incident.
